Unified Payments Interface explained: VPA/UPI ID, transaction limits, and paying to an account number with IFSC.
Quick summary✔ RBI dataLast synced · release v2.0.62

UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is NPCI's real-time mobile payment system. You pay to a UPI ID, phone number or QR code; IFSC is only needed when you pay directly to an account number. The usual limit is ₹1,00,000 per transaction, with higher limits for some categories.

UPI and IFSC

When you choose “pay to bank account” in a UPI app you enter the account number and IFSC; the payment still settles instantly over UPI.
